Hong Kong University's basic approach to pedagogy is based on the British university education model. Courses consist of both lectures, tutorials (seminars) and laboratory classes, where appropriate. Lectures are much larger than tutorials, which typically have 10-15 students. The tutorial is the traditional strength of the British university system. Participation in the tutorial is very important and can count for a significant part of the total grade.
The grading and GPA scale is the same as the University of Richmond.
Credits: Students will be expected to take 30 HKU credits per semester or 60 per year. At least three courses (worth 18 HKU credits) must be chosen from one single faculty per semester. The credit weighting of each course is varied so students must consult the course descriptions or syllabus on the individual HKU faculty web pages for further information. Students are expected to take all exams and assessments expected of the HKU students. No special arrangements can be made for early examinations.
To determine the unit value of an HKU course, the following formula will be used by the University of Richmond Registrar's office: HKU credits/7, round up to nearest tenth of a unit = equivalent units.
Keep in mind that a minimum unit load at . Richmond is 3.5 units. A maximum of 35 HKU credits may be transferred from each semester abroad, which is equivalent to 5 units. Therefore, in order to maintain full-time status at Richmond you should take no fewer than 24 HKU and no more than 35 HKU credits per semester. For more information about conversion to units, visit https://registrar.richmond.edu/registration/programs/study-abroad/units.html.
Below is a sample table with the conversion into units as it will appear on the UR transcript.
Exchange students can apply to live in one of HKU's halls of residence. If a student does not meet the deadlines or if the accommodation is full, the University will assist students in finding alternate accommodation. *Note that on-campus housing in the fall semester is much more difficult to obtain that HKU housing in the spring.
Students are required to apply for a student visa prior to departure. UR recommends that students apply for the student visa through the Centre of Development and Resources for Students at HKU. Please visit the HKU web site for more information:http://cedars.hku.hk/nonlocal/visa.html.
