Program Description:

About Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)

CIEE, a Richmond affiliate program, is the leading U.S. non-governmental international education organization.  CIEE's program in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE) allows students to learn more about issues impacting the UAE and the broader Middle East region. Note: The Sharjah program has an early application deadline (see below for detail on the dual-application process) and CIEE accepts applications on a rolling basis, so the earlier you apply the better. For more CIEE program information, please see: http://www.ciee.org/study-abroad/.

Eligibility

  • Eligibility for the various CIEE programs can vary. The parameters listed above simply point to the most common options (i.e., GPA of 2.75, language of instruction in English, etc.). Check the CIEE website for the eligibility requirements and information specific to your program(s) of interest at http://www.ciee.org/study-abroad/middle-east/.

  • Students interested in CIEE programs should have completed three semesters on campus prior to the period of study abroad. Transfer students must have completed at least three semesters of college or university study, one semester of which is to have been completed on campus at Richmond.

  • Robins School of Business students may transfer back credit from only one (1) business course taken while enrolled on the CIEE program to count towards their business degree.  Specific course approval must be given by Dr. Tom Cosse.  RSB students may transfer courses back from non-business subjects to count towards any non-business majors/minors and general education requirements (pending departmental approval) and towards the total units needed for graduation.
  • Note:  Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the university to study abroad. When reviewing applications for approval, disciplinary records will be taken into consideration and students must be cleared by the Dean's Office to study abroad. Students on conduct probation will not be able to study abroad if their probationary period extends beyond the start date of the semester abroad program.

Academics

Depending on the site, students typically may be able to take coursework in the following subject areas: Arabic, Biology, Chemistry, Communication, Computer Science, Economics (A&S), Education, English and Literature, Environmental Studies, History, Humanities, International Studies, Journalism, Math, Media Studies, Peace & Conflict Studies, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Sciences, Sociology, and WGSS. Internships may also be possible. For specific course details, go to http://www.ciee.org/study-abroad/. Students may also browse the American University of Sharjah online course catalog.

Students on CIEE programs normally take 12-16 credit hours. Specific program restrictions, requirements, and recommendations, including the recommended credit for each course, is on the CIEE web site at http://www.ciee.org/study-abroad/. All credit will be transferred back to UR using the Conversion to Units system.

To determine the unit value of a CIEE course, the following formula will be used by the University of Richmond Registrar's Office:  semester hours/3.5, round up to nearest tenth of a unit.  A 3-semester credit course will be transferred back to Richmond as .9 units.  A 4-semester course will be transferred back as 1.2 units.

Grading Scale

Students are graded using the U.S. system. Credit for grades lower than "C" will not be transferred back to the University of Richmond.

Room and Board

Housing arrangements vary depending on the program selected. See the CIEE website for specific details: http://www.ciee.org/study-abroad/

Application Process

Students applying for CIEE programs will need to complete the online UR Office of Int'l Education (OIE) application (by clicking the "Apply Now" button) AND will also need to complete a CIEE online application. To make this dual-process easier, the OIE will allow students to submit the CIEE-format letter of recommendation rather than the OIE-format letter (so your faculty do not have to write a letter to each organization). Students should simply skip the recommendation portion of the OIE application process and should provide faculty with the blank CIEE form instead (CIEE Evaluation 2017-18), instructing them to submit the completed letter of recommendation to the OIE. Once the OIE has finished evaluating the letter, it will be forwarded to CIEE to be attached to your CIEE application. We will also forward to CIEE the official UR transcript you submit to the OIE. Students should apply early, if possible, to allow time to complete both applications, as CIEE programs are known to fill early. Questions? Email abergman@richmond.edu.

Visa Information

Students on most programs are required to apply for a student visa prior to departure. CIEE will assist students with this process.
