Eligibility

Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the university to study abroad. When reviewing applications for approval, disciplinary records will be taken into consideration and students must be cleared by the Dean’s office to study abroad. Students on conduct probation will not be able to study abroad if they are on conduct probation that does not expire prior to the start date of the semester abroad program.

Non-Spanish majors and minors

  • Intermediate level of Spanish
  • 2.8 overall GPA
  • Junior or Senior year standing *2nd semester sophomores will be considered on a case by case basis

Major or minor in Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies (LALIS)  

GPA and course prerequisites for LALIS students are outlined on the LALIS web page  Read this page carefully prior to applyingPrior to submission of the study abroad application, LALIS students are required to meet with the faculty study abroad advisor in the LALIS department in order to discuss his/her academic program. A copy of the LALIS study abroad approval form should then be given to OIE and will be filed with the study abroad application.

Academics

Courses offered in Spanish language, literature, inter-cultural communication, TV studio, radio and journalism, graphic design (best in Argentina), music and Argentine culture are available.

Information about the Language and Hispanic Culture program describes courses available only to exchange students. 

Internships in business, communication, computer science, education, graphic design and social work are also available. Students should consult with Patrick Schweiger regarding academic credit (units) for internships.

Credits

Students are required to take 5 courses per semester at Blas Pascal. Most courses are 60 Blas Pascal credit hours.  


To determine the unit value of Blas Pascal course, the following formula will be used by the University of Richmond Registrar's office: The number of Blas Pascal contact hours/70, round up to nearest tenth of a unit. Most courses are 60 hours total. A 60-hour course will translate as .9 units.

Keep in mind that a minimum unit load at Richmond is 3.5 units and the maximum number of units that may be transferred from each semester abroad is 5.5 units.


Course selection

To find courses, click on the link above and select which OFERTA EDUCATIVA (list of departments that offer undergraduate degrees for particular majors) you are interested in taking in the regular Blas Pascal bachelor's program. Select plan de estudios from the bottom left menu. There will be a list of courses by year and semester. UR students can take courses in any year as long as they have the prerequisites. For course details, please email Michele Cox with the title of the course and the department (oferta educativa).

Accommodations

Richmond students are placed with Argentine families or can live in a residence hall on campus. The cost of housing includes 3 meals per day and weekly laundry. Shared kitchens are available in the residence halls and each room is provided with a microwave oven.  Click here for more information about the residence hall.


Students who meet the deadline for all forms are guaranteed housing.

Visa information

U.S. citizens: semester and year long students will enter Argentina on a tourist visa and then apply for the student visa once they get to Argentina.

The government of Argentina used to charge a reciprocity fee for all U.S. citizens entering Argentina. However, this fee has been revoked for U.S. citizens. For any future updates regarding reciprocity fees, please refer to http://www.embassyofargentina.us/en/consular-section/reciprocity-fee-for-us-citizens.html

Non U.S. citizens may need to obtain a student visa in the U.S. or in their home country.  Contact the Argentine consulate directly for more information.
