Université de Haute Bretagne/Rennes II The Université de Haute Bretagne (UHB), also known as "Rennes II", was created in 1970. It offers programs in foreign languages, humanities, literature, law and social sciences.
Student life is quite lively at UHB; there are numerous active student clubs and organizations.
The CIEE Study Center at Rennes
Established in 1971, the CIEE-Rennes program is designed to help students develop fluency in the French language and a better understanding of French culture and society.
This program is suitable for students interested in French language, culture, civilization, literature, art history, history, political science or teaching English as a foreign language.
About the city
Rennes (pop. 200,000) is located in the Brittany region and is approximately two hours by train west of Paris.
Eligibility for this program
2.75 overall GPA
3.00 GPA in French classes
Students doing a major or minor in French: At least six semesters of college-level French (including two classes at the 300 level)
Students not doing a major or minor in French: At least four semesters of college-level French
Preference given to students who have studied French in the semester immediately preceding their semester abroad
Participation may be denied, or acceptance may be revoked, if a student's conduct prior to departure raises doubts as to his or her suitability for the program.
New for Fall 2009
Due to increased popularity and new requirements set by UHB, admission to CIEE Rennes will be more competitive for those who apply in Fall 2009 or later. Applicants must first complete UR's application requirements. If UR then approves the student to continue to the next step in the review process, the student must complete CIEE's application materials immediately, as they admit students to the program on a rolling basis. In the event that CIEE is unable to accommodate all interested and qualified applicants, they will create a waitlist.
Eligibility for CIEE programs in general
Students interested in CIEE programs should have completed three semesters on campus prior to the period of study abroad. Transfer students must have completed at least three semesters of college or university study, one semester of which is to have been completed on campus at Richmond. Applications from students who are on conduct probation beyond the start date of their chosen CIEE program will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may not be eligible to participate. Participation may be denied, or acceptance may be revoked, if a student's conduct prior to departure raises doubts as to his or her suitability for the program.
Academics
Students begin the program by taking a language placement test that determines the type and level of classes they will take for the semester.
Classes. Participants in the program take two kinds of classes. All are taught in French by UHB faculty.
1. CIREFE classes. Students can take courses through the Centre International Rennais d'Etude du Français pour les Etrangers ("Rennes International French Studies Center for Foreigners"), for either the semester or the academic year.
2. UHB classes. CIEE students may also enroll in regular university courses, with approval from the CIEE Resident Director.
Special note for Fall semester participants: Exams for fall semester UHB classes normally take place in January, so students taking part in the program only for the fall semester should plan to take CIREFE classes.
Sometimes UHB professors will agree to give exams in December, but this is entirely at their discretion. If you intend to pursue this option, you should speak to your UHB professors about it at the very beginning of the fall semester.
Flexibility. Before going abroad, you must work with a faculty advisor in UR's French department to determine the classes you will take. However, on this program (and some others), you cannot completely finalize a schedule of classes until the program begins. Also, it is not uncommon for participants to need to change their class schedules after arriving in France; this, too, must be done in consultation with a faculty advisor in UR's French department.
CIEE credits and UR Units. The recommended credit for each course is quoted in CIEE's publications and web site. Please see these sources for details. For more information on conversion to units, click Conversion to Units.
Grading scale. The UHB uses the traditional French grading scale of 0-20. A score of 10 is passing in the French system, and grades above 16 are rare.
