Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1. Explore this website.

Read "Things to Consider" and FAQ.

Choose the "Find a Program" tab at the top of this site.  It will take you to the advanced search page where you can search by one or many parameters such as subject, GPA, eligibility, language, housing, or school.

Then you'll see a list of programs in your search results.  Click on a program name and you'll find a "brochure page" describing the program in detail.

Step 2. Attend an info session (mandatory).

All applicants for semester and full year programs must attend an info session at some time prior to going abroad--usually during freshman or sophomore year. See Info Session Schedule.

Step 3. Meet with a peer advisor (optional).

These are seniors who have studied abroad themselves and have been trained to answer questions about our policies, the application process, how to look up courses at an institution abroad, and much more. On the Peer Advisor page, you'll find their photos, their walk-in hours, and their contact information.

Step 4. Meet with a study abroad advisor (optional).

The study abroad advisors--Michele, Chris, Abby, and Amy--will help you with questions about the specific regions for which they are responsible. See the Study Abroad Advisors. They have walk-in hours Monday-Thursday from 2:00-4:00 pm.

Students with a major in the Robins School of Business should also meet with Dr. Tom Cosse, who is the Associate Dean for International Programs in the business school and the primary advisor for all business majors studying abroad. He can discuss business-approved programs, business school credit transfer issues, eligibility issues, etc.

Step 5. Meet with your academic advisors (mandatory).

Even if you're a freshman, it's not too soon to mention to your academic advisor that you're considering studying abroad. He or she will work with you to plan your curriculum, helping you decide the best time to go abroad and making sure you can complete your requirements and graduate on time.

Step 6. Will you take cousework in a language other than English?

If so, you may be required to meet with a "language abroad advisor" from one of the following areas: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Latin American and Iberian Studies. Click here to find out whether you must meet with one of the Language Advisors prior to submitting your application.

Step 7. Talk with past participants.

A peer advisor or an OIE advisor can give you the names of past participants in various programs. Students who have recently returned or who are still abroad are often very willing and even eager to share their experiences with you. Students tell us that, of all the information they received prior to going abroad, talking with past or current participants was the most valuable.

Step 8. Plan your budget.

You will find a budget "pop-up" sheet on each program brochure page. Also read about financial aid and scholarships. Talk to past participants about personal travel and entertainment expenses, which are not on our budget sheets. And don't forget to include your parents in this discussion.

Step 9. Complete the online application.

Once you're ready to apply, go to the brochure page for your program and click on "Apply Now." If the button is grayed out, that means that it's too early to apply. Please return later.

Step 10. Watch for the decision date.

Once the decision date arrives, you will receive an email that tells you to log in to this site and print your decision letter. The letter will tell you whether you've been accepted and give you instructions on what to do next.
