Richmond has over 75 programs in 30 countries, but which one is best for you? Finding one that meets your personal and academic goals can be quite a challenge. Below are some things to consider as you start this process. Then go to the "Step-by-Step Guide" which will point you in the right direction.
Think about academics
Do you want to earn credit toward your major or minor?
Do you want to learn about the culture of another country?
Do you want to take courses that are not available at Richmond?
Do you want to take courses that will help you decide on a future career?
Think about language
Do you want to gain fluency in another language?
Do you prefer studying in an English-speaking country?
Would you like to study in a non-Anglophone country, but at an institution where courses are taught in English?
Would you like to take some courses in English and others in another language?
Think about costs
Do you need to keep costs in line with what you would spend for a semester at UR?
Do you receive financial aid? If so, look at the "Financial Aid" page and you'll see that all institutional aid transfers to UR's semester programs.
Do you want to apply for a scholarship? See the "Scholarship" page for lots of possibilities.
Think about location
Is there a country that interests you because of your heritage?
Do you want to be in a small town or a big city?
Do you want a campus-like environment?
Do you look forward to challenges of a non-traditional location?
Think about the type of program
Do you want to experience a big university? If so, you'll have a wider variety of course offerings, but class sizes will be much larger than at UR. To make the most of this type of experience, you'll need to be independent and self-disciplined.
Do you prefer a small faculty-student ratio and a hands-on support system? If so, your OIE advisor can recommend some excellent programs that would meet this goal.
Do you prefer to learn in a classroom setting or in a non-traditional, experiential environment? The former is the norm for most UR programs; the latter is found through programs such as SIT and SFS.
Do you want an exceptionally challenging academic year abroad? If so, visit the brochure pages for Oxford and London School of Economics.
Think about housing
Do you want to live in a dorm or an apartment?
Do you want to live with a host family?
